Farm Forward is an organization working to inform individuals about their food choices, increasing sustainable agriculture, and fighting for reduced animal suffering. They do this by bringing attention to unfair agriculture practices, like factory farming. Their work is primarily in the United States but they also work outside of the US. Their campaigns primarily focus on animal advocacy and working with farmers.

Goals:

Goals of Farm Forward are based in the desire to promote agriculture that minimizes harm on the animals and workers involved. This includes the increase of awareness to bad farming practices around the country.

Structure:

Farm Forward is organized and governed by a wide array of individuals passionate about sustainable agriculture. Aaron Gross founded the organization in 2007 and is the chief executive officer. Steven Jay Gross is the chair of the board whose business expertise has allowed the group to earn corporate support and improve animal advocacy.

Genealogy:

Created in 2007 by Aaron Gross who saw the need for an organization to focus their efforts on ending factory farming. Founded individuals included Aaron and Ben Goldsmith. Now the team has a full staff of ten members and board members working to tackle issues in the United States and nationally.

Native American Rights Fund

Since 1971, the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has worked to provide legal assistance to Indian tribes, organizations, and individuals across the nation who might otherwise have gone without adequate representation. NARF has successfully asserted and defended the most important rights of Indians and tribes in hundreds of major cases, and has achieved significant results in such critical areas as tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, natural resource protection, and Indian education. NARF is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that focuses on applying existing laws and treaties to guarantee that national and state governments live up to their legal obligations.

NARF’s Five Priorities

Preserve tribal existence
The future existence of the remaining Indian tribes in this country depends ultimately upon secure and permanent land bases, and the rights of self-determination necessary to preserve traditional customs and ways of life. Read more.
Protect tribal natural resources
The natural resources found on Indian lands vary greatly. NARF concentrates its efforts in asserting tribal resource rights and protecting them from loss and exploitation by non-Indians. Major resource protection includes land rights; water rights; hunting, fishing and gathering rights; environmental protection; timber rights; and prudent development of mineral resources. Read more.

Hold governments accountable to Native Americans

Structure:

NARF is governed by a volunteer board of directors composed of thirteen Native Americans from different tribes throughout the country with a variety of expertise in Indian matters. A staff of sixteen attorneys handles over fifty major cases at any given time, with most of the cases taking several years to resolve. Cases are accepted on the basis of their breadth and potential importance in setting precedents and establishing important principles of Indian law.

Genealogy:

As part of the war on poverty launched in the mid-1960s under the Office of Economic Opportunity, government funded legal services programs were established around the country to provide legal services to poor and disadvantaged people. Many of these programs were located on or near Indian reservations. As these programs began working with their Indian clients, a common realization soon developed among them that Indians had special legal problems which were, for the most part, governed and controlled by a specialized and little-known area of the law known as “Indian Law” — a complex body of law composed of hundreds of Indian treaties and court decisions, and thousands of federal Indian statutes, regulations and administrative rulings. As legal services contended with this area of Indian law, they became more aware of its relevance and applicability to the problems of their Indian clients. This was especially so for legal services located on reservations where the presence of trust land, tribal resources and tribal government institutions necessarily involved the most basic tenets of Indian law. Soon, legal services lawyers became involved in various matters with national implications, and it was clear to those working in legal services and to others working for Indian rights that cases involving major national issues of Indian law needed to be handled with the greatest consideration. The idea began to form that a national organization was needed, staffed by Indian advocates with experience and expertise in Indian law and sufficiently funded in order that important Indian cases were not lost or abandoned for lack of funds.

In 1970 with funding from the Ford Foundation, California Indian Legal Services — one of the federally-funded legal services programs serving California Indians – implemented a pilot project to provide legal services to Indians on a national level. That project became known as the Native American Rights Fund (NARF).

One year later, the Native American Rights Fund separated from California Indian Legal Services and relocated to Boulder, Colorado where it is more centrally located. NARF incorporated separately with an all-Indian Board of Directors, and in a few short years, the Native American Rights Fund grew from a three-lawyer staff to a firm of forty full-time staff members, with fifteen attorneys. That same year, with start-up funding from the Carnegie Corporation, NARF established the National Indian Law Library now located at NARF’s main office in Boulder.

The Canary Coalition

Description:

The Canary Coalition works toward phasing out fossil fuels and nuclear energy in North Carolina, replacing current energy usage and generation in North Carolina with renewable sources like solar, wind, geothermal, tides, and waves. They also work to halt fracking and mountain top coal removal in North Carolina. Their campaigns mainly focus on public health and environmental concerns, which they present to large companies, public officials, and regulatory agencies in hopes of promoting a healthier and more sustainable future.

Goals:

Goals of the Canary Coalition, as stated in their mission statement, include protection of public health and the environment, as well as the creation of a more sustainable future.

Structure:

The Canary Coalition is led by a governing board of dedicated activists. Avram Friedman co-founded The Canary Coalition and is currently the executive director. Under his leadership, the group earned a Clean Air Excellence award from the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Genealogy:

Formally created in 2000, The Canary Coalition began with a few people in North Carolina who saw a need for activism and increased public awareness on public health issues like clean air and water. Founding board members include Executive Director Avram Friedman, Chairman Larry Nestler, and poet and author Thomas Raine Crow. They played a major role in the passage of North Carolina Clean Smokestacks Act in 2002.
