In 1977, Dr, Jane Goodall founded this institute under her name to continue her vision and lifelong work of saving the natural world and engaging communities to protect their environment. As a scientist and researcher, Goodall traveled to the forests of Gombe and lived with the chimpanzees in their habitat, where her discoveries changed the world's understanding of the endangered species. Now, she has adopted the labels of naturalist, conservationist, humanitarian, peacemaker, and mentor to spread compassion for all living things.

The Jane Goodall Institute works on a myriad of projects to impact local communities, empower youth, restore habitats, and save chimpanzees from extinction.

Goals:

Use scientific technologies and methods to track human impacts and restore healthy habitats for chimpanzees and other great apes
Educate communities to understand and adhere to laws that protect these species
Empower women/girls through education, improving their health, and provide them tools to improve their future
Work with local communities to improve their incomes and show them how to live in harmony with nature
Advocate for humans, animals, and the planet
Protect chimpanzees & other great apes through the Tchimpounga Sanctuary
Continue to develop Roots and Shoots: over 8,000 global youth leadership programs that exist in about 150 countries
Research at the Gombe Stream Research Center

Structure:

The Jane Goodall Institute has a Board of Directors, Senior Management, Global Board, and Staff. It employs over 300 individuals from different backgrounds, ranging from field scientists to people with conservation, media, nonprofit, and corporate knowledge and from different places, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Genealogy:

July 1960 - Jane Goodall arrives in Gombe, Tanzania to begin her research, where she discovered that chimpanzees eat meat, and make and use tools.

1963 - National Geographic publishes "My Life Among the Wild Chimpanzees", a cover story about Dr. Goodall and her research.

1977 - The Jane Goodall Institute is founded

1986 - Dr. Jane Goodall becomes an activist, shifting her focus from observation/research to a broader, holistic animal-human conservation approach.

1991 - The institute begins the "Roots & Shoots" programs, which empower and give resources to students in Tanzania.

1991 - Established the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, which provides a home for orphaned chimpanzees.

2004 - Dr. Goodall is named an UN messenger of Peace, the highest honor fo the UN for global citizens.

Communication Strategy:

The Jane Goodall Institute focuses mainly on local advocacy and works with communities to develop policies and conservation methods. It also uses social media and Jane Goodall herself travels as a "UN Messenger of Peace" to spread messages around the world in person.
