Response to action

SSCS has partnered with the Mexican government for this campaign, which has provided Navy escorts and stationed armed Federal Police, Marines, and Fisheries Officers on board SSCS vessels for security and to perform arrests when needed. This security is especially important, as poachers have become more aggressive toward SSCS vessels, even using firearms to shoot down surveillance drones near the ships in broad daylight.

Outcomes

This campaign is ongoing, but to date, SSCS has removed over 500 pieces of illegal fishing gear and saved over 2,500 marine animals in the process. They also discovered nearly 1,200 dead animals entangled in the nets as well as five dead vaquita during Milagro III alone, whose deaths they attributed to gillnets.
