Response to action

Coast guard officers began demanding Greenpeace activists to come down. The first two activists that they communicated with obliged, but the third refused. However, once the ship had passed, all of the activists voluntarily removed themselves from their slings and ended their protest. The protestors were detained, and seven of them were fined for interfering with vessel operations. In September 2015, Shell announced that it would stop Arctic drilling activities. This decision was likely heavily influenced by Greenpeace activism efforts, including the Portland bridge protest. Outcomes

The protest caused the ship to delay its departure from Portland from Thursday morning to Thursday evening. Although the protest was unsuccessful in ending the ship's journey, Greenpeace activists still considered it a win due to the fact that Shell still lost a few hours worth of work. The protest also garnered national attention, which sparked public criticism of Shell's oil drilling activities.
