About

This Tapestry of Hope project is powered by the Roots & Shoots program and Esri's Story Map visualization technology. The Tapestry of Hope plots the local projects by Roots & Shoots youth around the world in an interactive map.

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), Roots & Shoots is a global youth program originally started in Tanzania that has since spread to 140+ countries with over 4,000 project groups worldwide, involving nearly 150,000 youth. Participants identify and address local issues as the program supports this next generation to become informed, compassionate, and active citizens. The Roots & Shoots partners with schools, educators, and other youth organizations to empower young people.

Goals
The purpose of the project is to highlight thousands of stories and all of the remarkable work Roots & Shoots members have accomplished, marked in green. JGI partner, Dr. Sylvia Earle of Mission Blue uses this map to create a network of "Hope Spots", marking marine protected areas.

To quote the mission of Roots & Shoots as stated on https://www.rootsandshoots.org/aboutus: "to foster respect for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, other animals, and the environment."

Other Goals of Roots & Shoots:
  • Empower youth to become active, conversation minded citizens in their local communities through education and service based learning
  • Develop compassionate young leaders by training and equipping them with the necessary skills and traits
