JGI founded the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre (TCRC) in 1992, and since then has offered 25 years of sanctuary to orphan chimpanzees. Tchimpounga serves as a safe place for chimpanzees on this fight against illegal ape trafficking and poaching, caring for injured, sick, and often malnourished chimpanzees. The site was originally designed for 40-50 chimpanzees, so with the help of the government of Congo, JGI will expand the sanctuary and transfer about 120 chimpanzees to Tchindzoulou, Ngombe, and Tchibebe Islands. TCRC also supports law enforcement efforts through educational outreach and trains government officials to effectively engage with wild chimpanzees. Lastly, TCRC installs public awareness billboards across the Republic of Congo.
