Portland Bridge Protest

Thirteen Greenpeace protestors attached themselves to the St. Johns Bridge and dangled there for almost 40 hours in an attempt to block Royal Dutch Shell's icebreaker MSV Fennica from continuing its journey to drill for oil in the Arctic. Along with several Greenpeace "kayactivists", the protestors were successful in blocking the ship from moving forward Thursday morning. However, later in the afternoon Portland law enforcement got involved.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace is a nongovernmental organization that seeks to promote environmental justice through a variety of methods of nonviolent activism. Greenpeace's website states the following as its mission: Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future (Greenpeace).

Occupation of Sen. Mitch McConnell's Office

A group of survivors from both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey, which both occurred last fall, occupied the office of Senator Mitch McConnell on capitol hill. They wanted the senator to acknowledge that fossil fuel consumption has contributed to making tropical storms much worse over the past decade. Members of his staff were quite insistent that the protesters leave - however, they stood steadfast in their demands. 

#TimesUp: The Black Dress Protest at the 75th Golden Globes Awards

During the 75th Golden Globes Awards, many individuals wore black in solidarity of the Times Up movement that transpired in wake of the viral #MeToo movement. This became known as the black dress protest. The Times Up movement serves as a “next step” to the #MeToo movement where people, no matter their race, gender, or socioeconomic background, come together to create action-oriented goals that allow for meaningful change to occur, in regards to ending harassment for women in the workplace.

Occupy Central with Love and Peace

Occupy Central with Love and Peace was a civil disobedience campaign organized by Chu Yiu-ming, Dr. Benny Tai, and Chan Kin-man. The manifesto stated that it would campaign for universal suffrage through civil disobedience, civil referendum, and dialogue. OCLP advocates for universal suffrage, defended as the satisfaction of international standards such as equal weight for each vote, no unreasonable restrictions to stand for election, and by the means of genuine democratic process.

The Fight for $15

Underwritten by the Service Employees International Union, the Fight for $15 is composed of fast-food workers, home health aides, child care teachers, airport workers, adjunct professors, retail employees—and, as Fight for 15 puts its, “underpaid workers everywhere.”

Scholarism

Scholarism was a pro-democracy student activist group that fought for reform to Hong Kong's educational curriculum and political policy. It was founded May 29, 2011. It was reported to have around 200 members in May 2015. However, Scholarism was dissolved on March 2016 to merge together to form a political party called Demosistō. Demosistō takes many, if not all, of the beliefs and ideals Scholarism sought to enact. Demosistō was established on April 10, 2016 and is led by Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow, Nathan Law, and Oscar Lai. The Demosistō Facebook page currently has over 55,000 likes.

Americans Disabled for Attendant Programs Today (ADAPT)

ADAPT, or Americans Disabled for Attendant Programs Today, is a disability rights collective focused on highlighting and changing the institutional discrimination faced by disabled people. Founded in 1983 as a collective of activists from multiple existing disability rights groups who demanded that city buses include wheelchair-accessible lifts, ADAPT soon branched out into other disability rights issues, such as legislation that solidifies the rights of disabled people.
