The response to actions has been to curtail it by any means, as the government and police are both very involved in curbing it. It started off with preventing the formation of the union, which was then overcome. The company continued to exploit and abuse the workers, but their protests and strikes demanded they be taken more seriously. The incident involving the burning of the Manesar plant was unfortunate, as it led to the arrest and termination of numerous employees followed by a term of harassment of laborers and their families. Additionally, the verdict passed is largely unsubstantiated.
However, the grit and resistance that has been shown by the MSWU is not expected to taper, and they will not stop until true justice has been served, in spite of what the government may throw at them.
With regards to raising funds, they have been quite successful and raised a healthy sum of money for members of affected families. Although the strikes and marches stopped after the first year, they have still been having gate meetings and small peaceful protests to further the general cause. They are currently still working on achieving a favorable outcome regarding the verdict. As the verdict was given out by a sessions court, it will be appealed and taken up by the High Court.
A major outcome, however, has been with labor movements in general in the Haryana-Rajasthan belt of India, an increasingly industrialized region. It has spurred a new wave of labor movements, as these young first-generation workers were able to create an extremely innovative, multi-layered leadership structure. They used strategies that had not been used before and were not cowed down by the state or the management. In addition to being smart phone savvy and establishing a well thought-out communication chain, they were able to form a union against all odds and most importantly, combined the needs of permanent and contract laborers.
In doing all of this, the movement became one which other workers looked up to for inspiration, and has resulted in the drastic increase in worker struggles across this area.
