Prior to Unilever agreeing to change their welfare policy, millions of male chicks were killed by the practice of maceration. This involves day old chicks being ground up while still conscious. These practices still occur in the industry but Unilver has some of the highest egg demands in the industry. By targeting Unilever Farm Forward hopes to encourage other groups to discourage the practice of maceration.
